Seven weary men made our way through the quaint village of Aberlady, collapsed onto wooden benches outside the white-walled Kilspindie House after a day of travel and club swinging, and are now beguiled by a wispy grey beard ruffling in the sea breeze.

The conversation with Clive Clark began with an interesting fact. Of nearly thirty-four thousand golf courses in the world, there are only around two hundred and fifty true links. Genuine links are indeed a rare breed but this was why Clive clark was so excited by this project from the very outset and why he dedicated seven years to put his vision together.

Apart from being one of the finest links courses in the UK, Panmure was the perfect place to prepare for The Open of 1953 as it is just two miles from Carnoustie . Ben Hogan was accompanied only by his caddie, Cecil Timms, for that fortnight of intensive preparation.
